Nowadays we take flying off on holiday to faraway places pretty much for granted, but in the days before private cars, people had to rely on public transport for a day away.
Great Chesterford was well placed to cater for this need having, in the late 19th century, two main railway lines on its doorstep i.e. London to Cambridge, and London to Newmarket.
In those days Chesterford had many more shops and public houses than today, and some of these shops sold souvenirs to day trippers from e.g. Cambridge or Saffron Walden.
Some of these souvenirs have survived. They are not of any great quality – merely a memento of a good day out, to a very beautiful village.
