FARNHAM RECORDERS’ REPORT 2004

Farnham is a sociable village. Like all the villages in Uttlesford, one of the main concerns is the proposed Stansted Airport expansion, and several of us are still actively supporting SSE. Two years ago I sent a photo of our village war memorial to the Imperial War Museum who are forming a collection covering the whole of the British Isles. As the old cross on the top of ours disappeared many years ago, the village has been saving hard and a new cross was installed in 2004. I intend to send an updated photo as soon as possible. The village has had its usual annual events, the most successful financially being the Bluebell Ride. For those who have not heard of this, it is a sponsored horse ride through some of our gorgeous local woods and fields, some of which are usually private. This event could not take place were it not for the local volunteers who give up a whole day to act as stewards and make refreshments for sale. This year we reached our highest ever total of £10,000. This is badly needed to help pay for our church roof repairs. My main project at present is to help to put on a display about Farnham village school which has its centenary this year.

FARNHAM RECORDERS’ REPORT 2006-7

Village activities continue as usual and a monthly visit by a County Music Group is still well attended. Reports on various events are read out at the Annual Parish Meeting and are recorded in the monthly Parish News Magazines which are stored in the ERO at Chelmsford.

It was found that the north aisle in the church had been poorly repaired in past times and so was in a worse condition than expected, so instead of costing the expected £15,000 we had to find £96,000. This has been raised by various means and a lot of hard work by village people. The work has been completed and we are now collecting for further repairs on the main roof and the church organ which desperately needs refurbishment.

School numbers have fallen this year so the Education Authorities decided that it would be more economical to share a head and deputy head with Rickling Primary School. This system starts in September 2007. The two schools combined for a Performing Arts evening on July 4th which was very successful.

Free bus travel for the Over 60s was started in 2006. This enables any Farnham resident to travel on any bus in Essex free. At present we have one bus a week which makes one return journey to Bishop’s Stortford on Thursdays.

I am in the process of putting old school photos from Farnham on to a disk and labelling as many children as possible.

In church we have a framed picture with several photographs of past vicars. They are in a rather poor condition so I am making enquiries to see if I can stop any further deterioration.

Our Rector, Rev Andrew Spurr left in October 2006 to go to Evesham. A new Rector, Rev Paul Wilkin is being inducted on July 31st 2007.
