ELMDON & DUDDENHOE END RECORDERS’ REPORT 2006

!. History activities and new acquisitions

As editors of the Elmdon, Duddenhoe End and Wenden Lofts Gazette (published ten times a year), we include items of archival material in each issue – parish council reports, planning matters and general village events. A copy is given to Saffron Walden Library for their records. Old photographs have been donated or lent for the records. Some research has been done into house names.

2. Changes in village

Grade 2 Listed Buildings – a former shop in the High Street has been rebuilt. Hill Farm, North Wing Bangles, Bakers Cottage and Church Farm, all in Elmdon are being renovated. The building of a new house in the garden of Wheelwrights has been approved.

Other changes – A new vicar has been appointed. Trees and footpaths are monitored by the parish council. A harvest supper in Elmdonbury barn is now an annual event with minstrels in the gallery and about 200 people attend.

3. Future plans

We hope to start working on the RUTH database. We hope to research some ancient monuments in Elmdon – three moated sites and the castle mound which is a Roman hill fort.
